Anniversary Road trip

For my Anniversary weekend - my husband and I took a little Road trip to San Antonio and Comfort to get out of Houston for a change. (For those out of 'towners' - this is roughly a 200 mile trip West of Houston). Upon arrival and after a long and busy week at work for him and too many of the cocktails for me - we didn't actually do very much outside of the hotel! However I have decided to use this window to tell you what you should or could do when you go to San Antonio!

What we did do is stay in Hotel Havana - and this I would recommend to everyone! I love Boutique Hotels, not a big thing in the US, well certainly not many that I have come across in Texas, however the Bunkhouse Group seem to have it mastered! Such a cute hotel right on the River Walk next door to the Tobin Centre.

There is a great little Restaurant and Romantic Basement Bar linked to the Hotel which is great for a cocktails and light bites and even breakfast.

However if you are coming to San Antonio and want to see more than a cocktail list here are some recommendations:

San Antonio is home to a little piece of history called The Alamo. A fleeting visit for a European but almost a pilgrimage if you are a Texan! Its free, there is Air Con, and a nice item to tick off the tourist list.

The RiverWalk - a walk that goes along the river on both sides, quite busy with lots of bar restaurants and good people watching. Jogging and cycling too if you are that way inclined, although no designated space for either! The Riverwalk can get a bit busy at the weekends and there were a fair few drunks hanging about when we were there.

The River Boat Cruise might be a more enjoyable option and would probably give you a better view, It takes around 35 mins and is $10.

San Fernando Cathedral - Free - A historic piece of San Antonio after playing a role in the Battle of Alamo.

Market Square - A little bit of Mexico in downtown San Antonio, Mexican food, Mariachi Bands, a bit of a tourist trap with some tat to be bought if required!

San Antonio Zoo - $14.25 entrance fee to see the largest collection of endangered animals in the country - A 9000 acre space!! Retrospectively not sure how we missed it!

San Antonio was once a brewing town, home to Texas' two largest breweries which have since both closed. The Lone Star Brewery has provided a setting for the Museum of Art and the old Pearl Brewery - has had a massive face lift and is now home to shops, restaurants, a farmers market and new Hotel.

Further Afield

We woke up early and headed to Comfort - the cutest little place - a real bolt out of the blue. The town features almost 100 historic buildings constructed before 1910, seven of which were designed by noted architect Alfred Giles. Much of the town is designated a National Historic District. At High Cafe and store I had a gorgeous smoked salmon bagel and a cappuccino followed by a walk through the town which in theory shouldn't take long but with the street lined with Antique shops, Distillery, Pottery Shop, Book store, A hotel and some wineries you could be quite content here for a while! A definite recommendation: http://texashillcountry.com/welcome-comfort-texas/

Other options whilst you are in this area could be:

New Braunfels, Gruene, San Marcos and the Hill Country.
